What the Hell?!!

Giant Baby Draws Spectators to Indonesian Hospital

Taken from TheAge newspaper today.

Spectators flocked to an Indonesian hospital on Friday for a glimpse of the country's largest ever recorded baby - an 8.7 kilogram (19.2 pound) boy born by caesarean section to a diabetic mother.

The delivery of Akbar Risuddin, or Risuddin the Great in Arabic, took 40 minutes and the operation was complicated because of his unusual weight and size, doctors said.

The mother and child were both in good condition, Dr Binsar Sitanggang said Friday.

Crowds hoping to get a peek of the extraordinary newborn, who measured nearly 62 centimetres when he was born on Monday, gathered at the Abdul Manan hospital in the town of Kisaran, in the strictly Islamic province of North Sumatra.

"He is greedy and has a strong appetite, nursing almost nonstop," Dr Sitanggang said.

Risuddin's extreme weight was the result of excessive glucose from his mother during pregnancy, the doctor said.

Risuddin is the third child of father Muhammad Hasanuddin, 50, and mother Ani, 41, who like many Indonesians goes by a single name.

His two "little" brothers weighed 5.3kg (11.6 pounds) and 4.5kg (9.9 pounds) at birth.

The former Indonesian record holder was a 6.7kg (14.7-pound) baby boy born on the outskirts of Jakarta in 2007.

Guinness World Records cites the heaviest baby as being born in the US in 1879, weighing 10.4kg (23.75 pounds). However, it died 11 hours after birth.

The book also cites 10.2kg (22.5-pound) babies born in Italy in 1955 and in South Africa in 1982.

This is just ridiculous! Why is it such a media "hype"?? It almost makes the baby and the family spring into celebrity status. This kind of behaviour will only encourage them to sprout out bigger babies! How ridiculous is that?! GDM is not something you'd wanna be playing with! The baby could die~!

I don't think they realise how serious the condition can get.

Anyways, I'm just rambling. Ignore me. I'm annoyed.

Goodness. My vagina is crying from seeing this.

And I thought babies weighing 3.4kg - 3.7kg are big enough already

Adrianna: Hahahaha... I think she had a Caesar, so he vagina's saved... But I totally understand where you come from!

But yeah, nowadays, we do get big babies >4kg's. Probably not very common in Asia, I'm not sure. But certainly not a rarity here.

Quite shocking, I know...
