Mission Accomplished...

I started this NICU reg'ing rather unexpectedly, for those who knew what was going on in my life at that point. I decided to take it up as a stepping stone to O&G training, and also as a challenge to myself. I have always been afraid of NICU, I have to be honest... So different from adult medicine. So many beeping machines attached to them, so many lines inserted into their tiny little body. Those small, fragile things, who mean the world to their parents... I almost think to myself sometimes, "You break them, you pay~!!!".

I started this job with an amount of fear, for there is soooo much to learn with my minimal paediatrics experience. But I was also positive that I would be able to handle this position. If anything, it would make me a stronger person. More experienced, so I could counsel my obstetrics patients based on my first hand experience in the future.

The past two weeks have been crazy hectic at work... not in terms of numbers, but rather complexity. We have babies on high frequency oscillation, intubated, on nitric oxide and inotropes... 2 gastrochisis, NEC's and of course, the usual preterm infants. Been leaving work late, the last 2 days in a row. Jon's not too happy about that, of course... But I am going to be off the next 4 days! Yippie!! Too bad it's so last minute now, I can't make it back for Yap's wedding...

NICU has been so much fun, it seems like February is coming real soon~! It feels like I am only starting to feel more competent tubing little premi's and soon enough, this will be the end of my stint, and I will have to move back to Obstetrics. It's not that I don't like Obstetrics as much... I am sure I will enjoy it again once I get back into the swing of things... And besides, I should get alot more procedure / operating time next year being a trainee.

But hey, keeping my options open I guess... The adrenaline rush of being called to emergency deliveries, getting paged for Code Greens and Code Pinks. Resuscitating flat babies and premature infants... oh so exciting~! I just realised that I worked almost 100 hours the most recent fortnight... but I am loving it. I come home exhausted, but satisfied and with a smile on my face...

The thank you cards, and friendly hugs at the end of the day, are little reminders that I am doing my job well :)

Well, most days.

Let's just hope these crazy working hours doesn't take a toll on my personal life...

Esther: Which code brown in particular??

Oh btw,
Code Green - Emergency Caesar ie. Drop everything and run to OT.
Code Pink - Obstetrics Emergency - can range from anything from a PPH to APH, to preterm delivery in the ward or anything at all.
And of course, we love our MET call and Code Blue's as well....

The rest, I don't really respond to - or at least most times, have to look at my card to see what they actually mean... hehe.
